Nicholas Breakspear Nicholas Breakspear was the only Englishman ever to become Pope in Rome. He was born in the parish of Abbots Langley in approximately 1100 at Breakspear Farm, near Bedmond. He became Pope Adrian IV (1154-1159). In 2000 we commemorated his birth. We hope to present information relating to Nicholas Breakspear on these pages.
